Fashion Design

As the popularity of fashion-based reality TV shows skyrockets, the fashion industry is quickly becoming one of the most sought after career fields. Careers in fashion design can run the range from being an international haute couture designer to working as the local dressmaker and seamstress. Fashion design is an exciting and creative career that can be entered into by anyone with drive and a passion for fashion.

The best candidates for success in the fashion design industry are those men and women who have a natural flair for clothing and accessories. The fashion industry is tough and anyone seeking to enter it needs to have an interest and enthusiasm for clothing.

Fashion Design Degrees

For some, getting started in the fashion design industry means attaining an Associate or Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design. Instruction in fashion design includes several areas such as:
  • Design theory

  • Pattern making

  • Sewing skills

  • Fabric choice

  • Sketching

  • Computer design.

The business side of fashion is covered through courses in marketing and understanding the fashion industry.

After Fashion Design School

Most students who graduate with a degree in fashion design will become interns with fashion designers or manufacturers. This will give them the experience they need to have success in the industry. Interning also gives them the opportunity to see how the fashion design industry runs in the real world. An internship in fashion design can be an eye-opening experience and give graduates an estimation of what their careers will be like.

Fashion Design on a Smaller Scale

Many people enter a fashion design program with no intention of jet setting in the fashion hot spots of New York, London or Paris. They instead wish to develop a small fashion design business in their local area. Those who are considering starting a fashion design business should take courses in business management in addition to basic marketing classes. Owning a small fashion design business allows a designer to have complete control over their designs and serve a small and loyal group of clientele.

Before starting a fashion design business, the potential owner should develop a comprehensive business plan for success. The business plan should cover all aspects of the fashion design business including marketing, handling work related expenses and tax issues. Other issues to consider are hiring a design assistant and finding a manufacturer to provide raw materials.
