Bow Tie

A bow tie is a shorter version of a tie, which is knotted in a bow at the neck. Bow ties are commonly worn with formal attire, such as tuxedos and suits, or semi-formal attire, such as dinner jackets and button down shirts. The bow tie was a popular accessory from the 1800s until the late 1900s, when the more stylish and trendy necktie was born. Although the bowtie is not as popular today as it was for casual wear, the style lives on through the popularity of wearing them with tuxedos, clown gear, on popular syndicated television shows, and in other live acts.

Types of Bow Ties

Like most accessories, bow ties are sold in a wide variety of styles, fabrics, and colors. There are several types of bow ties, including: the band-tie, which is "pre-tied," attached around the neck, and can be worn with any collar; the clip-on, which is usually worn with a regular collar shirt; the self-tie, which is manually tied into a bow by the wearer; the western-tie, which is typically worn with a western tuxedo. Silk is the most common fabric used for bow ties, but they can also be made from cotton, polyester, rayon, or even wool.

Where to Buy Bow Ties

Bow ties can be found at just about any retail store that sells business attire, formal wear or semi-formal wear. A great place to start your search is online. The vast majority of department stores have websites featuring most of their bow tie styles, colors and pricing, as well as secure online ordering.
