Bowling Shirts

Bowling is one of the most popular sports in the world today, enjoyed by more than 100 million people in 90 countries across the globe. It is one of America's favorite pastimes and has been a popular recreational sport in the United States since the early 1900s. Professional bowling has been around since the early 1900s as well, but it was not until the early 1950s to 1960s that professional bowling became a popular sport to watch. In the 1950s, Championship Bowling was televised by NBC. In the 1960s, ABC Sports Broadcasting began following the Pro Bowling Tour. Today, competitions, cash prizes and audiences are bigger than ever before.

Bowling Shirts

Like any other sport, uniforms came into play when leagues began to form and a certain "look" was required to set each league apart from others. Not only was the look important, but more importantly, bowling attire had a specific function as well. In order for professional athletes to compete and train successfully, the proper shoes, shirts, and even pants were required to enhance the bowler's ability to perform.

Selecting a Bowling Shirt

One of the single most important characteristics of any bowling shirt is comfort. Because tight clothing can hinder the bowler's ability to perform, bowling shirts should be loose-fitting. Bowling requires a great deal of movement, so the shirt should be loose under the arms and across the shoulders. If a bowling shirt interferes with the motion of the arms or legs, it could potentially cost a bowler the competition.

Bowling shirts are generally short sleeved, button-down shirts made of cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester; they may also be made of rayon or polyester alone. Because cotton shirts breathe better, they are the most popular choice. Classic bowling shirts typically feature 2 colors, with the body and trim generally in different colors. Heavy solid lines are common in the shirt designs. The league or team name is generally sewn into or screen-printed on the back. Patterned bowling shirts are not considered classic, but more for fashion.

Purchasing a Bowling Shirt

Whether you are in a league or simply want to make a fashion statement, bowling shirts may be purchased from a wide variety of online retailers. Ready-made or custom shirts are available. Prices will vary according to quantity and design. Bowling shirts (for purposes of fun) may also be purchased from many chain retail stores, vintage clothing shops, and boutiques.
