Bridesmaid Dress

The tradition of matching bridesmaids' dresses began during superstitious times, when it was believed that if the bride and groom were surrounded by close friends and family in similar attire, evil spirits would be confused. This confusion would lead them to be unable to locate the couple, and the evil spirits and demons would then have no way of bringing the bride and groom bad luck.

Old Fashioned Bridesmaid Dresses

There are several reasons why bridesmaids' dresses used to look almost exactly like the bride's dress. Years ago, during times when arranged marriages were a common practice, bridesmaids' dresses were very similar to the actual bride's dress. The purpose of this was to have a substitute bride close by in case there was an objection to the scheduled marriage. Additionally, during times when dresses were specially-made, it was more cost-efficient to make the bridesmaid dresses out of the same material as the bride's dress rather than having to buy and choose different fabrics.

Today, while we still follow many of the same traditions, such as matching bridesmaids' dresses and friends standing near the couple during the ceremony, much of the symbolism, superstitions, and traditions have been lost.

Choosing Your Bridesmaids Dresses

Bridesmaid dresses can be difficult to shop for, especially if you have a large wedding party. What may look beautiful on one of your bridesmaids may be terribly unflattering on another. To solve this problem, some brides allow their bridesmaids to choose their own dresses. Bridesmaids tend to appreciate this option because it gives them a greater chance of being able to wear the dress again. Some brides allow their brides to pick different colors of the same dress style, while other brides give their bridesmaids the option of ordering different styles in a consistent color and fabric. Allowing for variation in your bridesmaids' dresses offers a modern approach, as well as a way to make sure all of the girls are happy and comfortable on the day of the wedding.

Extremely formal and traditional weddings typically require bridesmaids to wear the exact same ensemble. Additionally, brides who are afraid to allow their maids to choose their own dresses will often select the style and color to prevent disaster. If you are intent on having all of your bridesmaids wear the same dress, the best way to choose one is to select a few of your favorites and put the final decision to a vote among the girls involved.
