Briefcase
A briefcase is the classic means of carrying files and keeping materials organized. Not only do briefcases transport and organize, but they also emit an air of professionalism. A person carrying a briefcase is often perceived more professional or executive than someone without one. Clearly this perception depends on many factors, however the image and perception is commonly known. Traditionally defined, a briefcase is a narrow box-shaped leather bag with a handle used to transport documents. It received the term briefcase because lawyers would use these cases, as is still the habit, to carry briefs to present in court.
Types of Briefcases
Nowadays, briefcases are used to carry various papers and even laptop computers. Although originally made in leather, they are available in non-leather materials such as ballistic nylon, vinyl and synthetic leather. In today's mobile society, some briefcases are on wheels for convenience. Messenger bag briefcases, or brief bags, have a flap covering the front of the bag. Other briefcases open at the top frame with brackets or a zipper. An attaché is a deviation of the classic briefcase. Attaches are usually firm, sturdy briefcases often made of gunmetal, aluminum, steel and even silver. Found in the basic shapes, these are very durable and offer a twist to the regular briefcase.
Briefcase Features
Other twists to the classic briefcase include features such as pockets, expandability and design. They can be personalized by adding a name or monogram. Once known simply as a small suitcase, briefcases now have compartments for cell phones, pens, coins and other objects. They offer expandable options so as to fit extra additional files or a laptop when needed. Along the same lines, there are slim-down options as well, making it quick and easy to zip it up tighter when so desired. Originally thought to be the executive or lawyers bag, briefcases have grown more relaxed and can be found with a less masculine edge. They are offered in bright colors, new designs and built from a variety of non-leather materials. Unlike the typical briefcases available for men and women, special purse-like briefcases are marketed solely to women. These have long handles that give the briefcase a more tote- or purse-like impression.
Finding Briefcases
Briefcases can be purchased in corporate stores, office supply stores, bag stores and computer stores. There are designer briefcases and the more generic ones. The price range varies drastically depending upon designer, material and feature set. Besides locating them in these popular stores, briefcases are available online, too. And, often times, they are presented as a gift to and from coworkers or given as a way to say congratulations on a promotion.
