Catalogs
The Sears catalogs of yesteryear were as large as phone books and you could peruse the pages for anything from dresses to a new house. However, the days of the Sears catalog are gone and have given way to many different specialty catalogs, which purport to sell not just clothes or accessories, but a lifestyle. Most apparel companies offer their catalog in many different forms: print, online or downloadable.
The Tried and True
Yes, there are paper catalogs still around in the computer age. However, they are no longer a visual list of clothes and their prices, they are almost like works of art. Anthropologie has one of the most visually appealing catalogs. Photo shoots are often in exotic places. The richness of the photo story matches the unique clothes the catalog offers.
Online Catalogs
It makes sense in today's business world for apparel companies to offer their catalogue not only in print form, which comes via mail, but also in an electronic format. Coldwater Creek clothing company offers their the same catalog as you would see in print but on their website. The most entertaining part is that your computer's mouse can act like a hand and turn the pages just as you would with any printed hardcopy.
Online Catalog Search
If you don't know specifically what catalog you'd like to order from, Google has a BETA program where you can do a specific search or browse for mail order catalogs online. Categories range from apparel and accessories to office supplies. Once you find a catalog, it displays two pages at a time in multiple frames on the same web page. There is a Google navigation bar that displays the publication date, phone number, and URL of the company. Because of the large number of images, the catalogs are best viewed over a broadband Internet connection.
Downloadable Catalogs
Some websites, such as make up and beauty retailer, Sephora, offer their most current catalog as a downloadable PDF file. Sephora also has a link to the free Adobe Acrobat Reader for you to download, which makes it possible for you to read the catalogue on your computer if you don't already have the software. The catalog is divided into sections: Hair, Skincare, Fragrances, etc., and Sephora's website gives you the option of either downloading the full catalog or just the individual sections that seem most interesting to you. If you have a slower computer the latter is probably the best option.
Free Catalog Lists
Another way to search for catalogs is through catalog websites. Catalogs A to Z offers a search tool as well as a listing of catalogs for those that would just prefer to get the paper in their hands. Organized by type of catalog, the site gives the name of the company, their 1-800 number, as well as a link to their website. By either calling the specific company or going to their linked website, you request the catalog through the merchant, not the Catalogs A to Z website. They offer a print version of their directory as well for about $10, which can be mailed to you.
