Class Ring

A class ring is a keepsake that many people buy upon graduation from high school and college. It is a symbol of achievement and distinction. The tradition of the class ring started in 1835 at West Point, the United States Military Academy.

Style and Design

Typically, a class ring is made from a yellow gold, white gold, or silver mount—either solid or plated—with a colored gemstone that matches the school colors, for example red, blue, green, or black enamel. Sometimes people use a birthstone or other favorite color for the stone color instead.

The name of the high school or college usually encircles the stone and, due to the use of a special molding process, appears engraved. The year of graduation is typically located on one of the shoulders of the ring, which are located on either side of the colored stone, with the school mascot on the other shoulder. Other ways to personalize a class ring include adding a sports team, or a favorite club.

How to Buy a Class Ring

Most people purchase a class ring prior to graduation, however, a class ring can be purchased at any time—even long after you have graduated from high school or college. Today, a class ring is no longer just for those who graduate from a traditional school. A class ring may be bought by students who have been home schooled, or by students graduating from police or fire academies for instance.

In most cases, the school has pre-determined several class ring designs for students to choose from, including the type, karat, and finish of the metal and the colors, sizes, shapes (oval or rectangle), and cuts of the stones. If for some reason someone is not happy with these choices, it is possible to custom design a class ring. A class ring is usually purchased from a company representative who visits the school, takes the order, collects payment, and brings the class ring back to the student when it is ready.

As with any ring, a class ring should be fitted to determine ring size, even if you already know your ring size. A class ring for a female student is generally smaller in overall dimensions than a class ring for a male student. It is best to work with the representative of the company that is selling the class ring.
