Clothing For Tall Men
Clothing for tall men refers to clothing that is designed and marketed for men who are typically 6 feet in height or taller. Often, it is an all-encompassing term that refers to big, athletic, and husky builds as well as tall men. Increasingly often, however, clothing for tall men refers to just that—tall men who have a thin or regular build and are tired of wearing ill-fitting baggy clothes.
The difference is that proportions are extra long. For example: extra-long neckties, longer sleeves and longer shirt bodies, socks, or a longer rise in a pair of pants. Although clothing for tall men is usually more expensive (because more fabric is used), most retailers specializing in this type of clothing strive to make it affordable as well as high quality.
Where to Buy It
Throughout history, clothing for tall men had to be custom-made. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that stores featuring clothing for tall men were introduced. Stores selling clothing for tall men feature the same types of clothing that not-so-tall men wear, such as business attire, casual wear, sportswear, and formal wear in both classic and trendy styles.
Most clothing for tall men falls outside the standard sizes and cannot be bought "off the rack" in the men's department of a clothing store. Some men's departments do carry clothing for tall men, but most is sold in what is called a super specialty store. Another option is to shop online catalogues. Some brands such as Land's End and Eddie Bauer cater to tall men as well.
Getting the Right Fit
Clothing for tall men is sized the same way as any other clothing for men is sized. Pants are sized by the waist measurement followed by the inseam measurement. Pants also have variations in the rise, or the measurement from crotch to waist. Typically, tall men find that the rise on a pair of pants is too low. Shirts are sized by neck measurement and sleeve length. Tall men may need larger sizes for the sleeve length but find the body of the shirt is not long enough to tuck into a pair of pants or that it is too boxy looking.
When buying online, check the size charts for that particular store. As with many brands, sizes may vary. When buying in person, it may be necessary to visit a number of stores to find the brands and styles that best suit your body type.
