Clothing
Before photography, we had artist's renderings of contemporary society to tell us about the clothing of the day. If anything, interest in fashion has only grown over the centuries.
What is Fashion?
Fashion sense is the ability to distinguish between which types of clothing or accessories look good and which do not. Fashion is a subjective notion. Designers show the public what is new and in style by using fashion models to display clothing. Image consultants help people revamp or create fashion sense. Fashion can operate differently depending on gender, or it can promote homogeneity as in unisex styles.
The Function of Clothing
All clothing makes a statement about the wearer. Before people talk to one another, their clothing makes a statement that expresses their sex, age, class, occupation, origin, and personality, as well as who they are or want to be at a particular moment. A businessperson, for instance, is easily recognized in a well-tailored suit.
Clothing can range from the conventional to the eccentric. Dress can identify its wearer with a social group or role that the individual wants to emulate. Many businesses and schools even offer classes to prepare students for applying to jobs and dressing appropriately for them.
Trends
For many, fashion is staying one step ahead of the trends and just having fun. Some of the latest trends suggest a rewrite of 60s metal-disc dresses. Origami belts are being redesigned in side-tied versions with oversized bows, and paired with Asian preppy separates. Shearling and leather are back in ultramodern separates. Also returning are the prairie skirt, fringed bags, gloves, and tooled-suede. Basic black is back, bringing column gowns and swingy coats. And these days, men -- particularly young men, are just as interested in fashion as women. The bottom line is this: if you've got a storage locker, keep all your clothes. Sooner or later, what went out will be back in style.
