Cocktail Dress

A cocktail dress is a dress that is worn to cocktail parties and other formal social events. It is also called a "little black dress", a term made famous by Coco Channel in the 1920s. Typically, the length of a cocktail dress ranges from just above to just below the knee, but sometimes the dress is tea length, which is just above the ankle.

Styles

A cocktail dress falls somewhere between a suit and an evening gown. The classic cocktail dress is understated and elegant. Most are simple in design; one such example is the sheath.

However, some cocktail dresses are more elaborately detailed, sporting feathers, gold lame, or ruffles. A cocktail dress is usually sleeveless, short or cap-sleeved, or has spaghetti straps. A cocktail dress can also be strapless, although this may be too formal for most occasions unless a wrap is worn.

Black is the most common color for the cocktail dress, but other colors are worn as well. Dark blue, wine, gray, dark brown, and cream are all perfectly acceptable. Matching stockings and a string of pearls typically complete the look.

Fabrics

A cocktail dress can be made from a variety of fabrics, including silk, satin, wool crepe, rayon, or fine-gauge cotton. The fashions of the season usually dictate which fabric is preferred at the moment. Wool, for instance, is best for fall and winter months, while cotton is more suitable for summer parties. Silk, satin, and rayon are suitable for year-round wear.

Accessories

When wearing a black cocktail dress, sometimes color is used to enliven the look or make a statement. In most cases, however, the shoes worn and handbag carried are black as well. Earrings are another way to add sparkle and color to a cocktail dress.
