Cowboy Boots
Cowboy boots, like no other apparel item, mark a person's character and can literally tell a story through their design. Unlike the original styles of the Old American West, modern cowboy boots with pointy toes, elaborate stitching, and embedded jewels prove that they are more than just functional footwear.
Function and Fashion
While cattle ranchers and horsemen still rely on the sturdy functionality of cowboy boots, the majority of them are designed and constructed to conform to what fashion dictates. Some examples of purely aesthetic elements of the cowboy boots of today include:
- Hand-carved designs that depict whatever the wearer wants to relate (for example, pictures of beloved pets, family members and even self-portraits)
- Elaborate stitching (usually a floral pattern) that begins at the top, travels around the boot and eventually swirls down to the toe
- Hand-painted designs that show off the artist's talent and ability as well as the wearer's personality
- Rhinestones, diamonds, coins, precious stones, gold and silver studded designs
In addition to the many elaborate details from which to choose, there is a wide variety of cowboy boot styles available. Each style of boot has its own function and purpose. Certain types of boots are more appropriate for certain events. For instance, while the rough-riding buckaroo style boot is ideal for horse riding, it would not be the best boot to wear to a funeral. On the other hand, an exotic ostrich leather boot probably would not be the right choice for rounding up cattle, but would definitely draw attention at a special event.
Other Types of Cowboy Boots
Other styles and their functionality include:
- Ropers – probably the most popular boot among men, women and children, worn for both style and function. These boots are usually constructed with a rounded toe and flatter heels.
- Lace ropers – another popular style, these ropers lace up rather than pull on. These boots often come with a removable kiltie.
- Packers – sturdy boots that are built for horse riding, packers are usually taller in height than ropers.
- Steel-toed – built for optimum foot protection, these boots are made to protect the foot when even the heaviest iron horseshoe might be dropped.
Regardless of whether you are looking for cowboy boots that will protect you during a day of hard work or one that will dazzle your friends while line dancing, you are sure to find the perfect pair of cowboy boots among the wide range of available designs and styles.
