Custom Tailor

Sometimes the store just doesn't have the right fit or the right kind of cloth. For any such occasion, consumers can turn to custom tailors. Depending on their levels of experience, custom tailors can be used to make small adjustments in garments, or full specialty suits, dresses, or outfits. Many tailors consider this practice an art form, as each outfit is designed and cut to fit the specific needs of an individual.

Of course, if you are going to pay for the services of a custom tailor, you may find yourself paying much more than you would if you were to simply pick something from off the rack in a store. The price will certainly also be determined by the type of fabric used to make the clothing. Small alterations to a garment, however, shouldn't be terribly expensive. A hem to a sleeve, dress, or pant leg could cost as little as $10.

Careers

In general, a custom tailor makes garments especially for people and does not devote much effort to the business of making alterations. Custom tailors can make a garment from start to finish by taking a customer's measurements and then determining the style of the outfit to be made. Many times, custom tailors also design their own patterns. Often, custom tailors work with people who want to make a fashion statement or who might be too big or too small to fit clothes in a store.

Alteration tailors use pin folds to hold alterations in place for simpler operations such as hems. They remove old stitching and sew in new stitches. They can also make other alterations by adding shoulder pads or lining and can make changes to waist or chest sizes. Some of those alterations can be made using a sewing machine, while some can be done by hand.

There is no special degree required to be a tailor. The average hourly pay rate is around $12.
