Feather Boas
Feather boas can be a dramatic fashion accessory for a costume. Depending on the season, they also tend to fall in and out of fashion.
Types of Feather Boas
Feather boas are usually made of ostrich, turkey ruff, marabou, chandelle, and coque feathers. A feather boa made from the feathers of an ostrich wings is very elegant and considered the most luxurious of all boas. It is also more comfortable than other boas because it will not make the wearer overly hot upon wear. Ostrich boas tend to be more expensive than turkey ruff, marabou, chandelle, and coque boas.
Turkey ruff feathers are flat feathers taken from turkeys and made into boas that insulate exceedingly well. Marabou boas are made of fluffy turkey feathers taken from the hip areas. Chandelle boas are made of small flat feathers taken from the back, neck, and chest of turkeys.
Roosters and chickens feathers are used to make coque boas. You can also find feather boas made from peacock and swan feathers. These are exquisite looking boas, but should probably be worn at cool outdoor events as they are large and heavy. Peacock and swan feather boas do not lend themselves to extended wear indoors.
Characteristics
The feathers on boas can be dyed one color, tipped so that only the end of the feathers are colored, or striped with two colors, depending on the type of feather being used.
Some feather boas blend different types of feathers to give the boa a fuller look. After feathers are sorted by size, they are sewn to strings. Each string is called a ply. The more plies a feather boa has, the fluffier, and more expensive, it will be.
You can purchase feather boas in several different lengths. Also available are boas with variegated feathers, ostrich feather boas where the feathers are curled, and cruelty-free feather boas.
