Fur Coat
For decades, fur coats have been a classic article of clothing found in many women's closets. Considered to be a status symbol, many fur coats have been passed down from several generations of women. Not only are they elegant and stylish, but they also keep the wearer very warm during cold winter months. There are many different types of animal fur that are used to make clothing for women, including, but not limited to, traditional furs from beavers, foxes, and minks; costly and uncommon furs come from chinchillas and sables. For men's apparel, coyote and opossum furs are most typical.
Choosing a Fur Coat
Before purchasing a fur coat, educate yourself about the different types of fur in order to determine which you like best. Visit several stores with good reputations as well as sales people who are reliable and can offer expert advice. Be sure that you can clearly distinguish the good from the bad by looking at and feeling the fur. To determine the length and style, think about the occasion when the coat will most likely be worn. After finding a few fur coats that you like, try them on to make sure it is the right length and that it is not too heavy.
As fur is not cheap, set a reasonable budget for the purchase. Factors such as the type and amount of fur utilized, brand, style, length, and workmanship will affect the cost of the coat. Keep within your budget, but purchase a coat with the best quality fur, even if it means the animal is not as exotic. A fur coat is an investment, and you should avoid buying a mediocre jacket.
Assessing Quality
Keep in mind that if something is too good to be true, chances are, it is. If you find a high-quality fur coat at a bargain price, it can almost be guaranteed that it is of poor quality. Make sure the underfur is even and of high quality. Also, in cheaper fur coats, strips of leather are woven between strips of fur to give the impression that more fur is used than is actually the case. There should not be any leather in fur coats of the highest quality. Carefully examine the stitching to ensure the coat has straight hems and tight seams.
Animal Rights
Some animal rights activists frown upon sacrificing animals for the sake of fashion. Whether it be political or financial reasons, fur coats are not for everybody. There are many jackets made with fake fur that look and feel just like the real thing that can be purchased at a fraction of the cost. Simply check the label of the article of clothing to make sure the fur used is synthetic.
