Hair Clippers
Hair Clippers and small personal trimmers have come home with us from the salon. Designs have become much more attractive and user-friendly. Some even include "how to" videos! We may or may not use them to cut and style our own and our families' hair, but either way these personal care devices come in very handy for light personal trimming and grooming.
The Buzz on Trimmers
Hair Clippers can be used for many kinds of personal grooming, and there are a wide choice of trimmers and accessories from which to choose from:
- Personal grooming kits -- These sets are very versatile and usually consist of a main "power head" with many attachments. Prices vary depending on the number of attachments and the quality of the power head. Keep in mind that a poor quality main device will render all of the attachments useless if it fails. The range of attachments may include an assortment of different-sized trim heads, styling combs, scissors, and a blade guard.
- Travel kits -- These are more compact kits designed to be light and travel-friendly. Often they'll have a soft leather or vinyl carrying case. Most of these trimmers and clippers are battery powered, so make sure you check the batteries and that they are fully charged before packing your trimmer.
- Specialized trimmers -- There are electric clippers and trimmers designed to groom a particular area, such as nose or ear hair. The recent popularity of shaved heads among men has spawned various products that make head shaving much easier. Other devices such as the RoboCut and FlowbeeŽ have vacuum attachments which make clean-ups a breeze!
- Pet clippers and trimmers -- Taking your pet to be clipped and groomed can be very expensive. A dedicated pet grooming kit can save you a lot of money over the long term, and a clipper with a vacuum attachment will save you a lot of time and trouble.
Any good-quality hair clipper will come with a multi-year warranty. Most include a supply of replacement cutting blades, be sure that you can easily source more blades when your supply runs low. Better clippers often include some basic attachments and cleaning supplies such as a brush and lubricating oil. As hair clippers are electrically powered, they may come with an AC Adaptor and a recharging station.
Close Shaves
While electric personal trimmers and hair clippers are safe if used as intended, they ARE electrical devices and common sense precautions should be taken. Avoid using them in wet areas and make sure your hands are dry. Care should be taken around areas of sensitive skin to avoid the possibility of having exposed flesh trimmed along with hair. Overly vigorous use of an electric trimmer can result in painful razor burn. Regularly cleaning the trim head (with the device unplugged) will ensure the cutting blades can function properly. At that time, check that any ventilation holes or grills are clear and clean them if necessary. Most quality clippers provide complete safety and maintenance information in their accompanying manuals, take a moment to read through them before using your home personal care device.
