Leather Jacket

Whether worn for fashion or protection, leather jackets have been around for decades. Along with trends that continue to rise and fade, jackets made of leather have gone through a variety of looks and styles. Television shows, movies, musicians, and the movie stars make this type of jacket somewhat iconic. They emit a certain "bad-boy" attitude, thus symbolizing an intimidating, rebellious image. Examples of this iconic image include Marlon Brando in "The Wild One," John Travolta and fellow greaser cults in "Grease," as well as James Dean.

Leather Jacket Styles

Designer or not, the large selection of leather jackets is astounding. Made of real leather, these jackets will last a lifetime. They are typically found in brown, black or dark gray colors and designed for women, men, and children. Some of today's styles include distressed leather jackets, which provide a vintage-look; faux fur and smooth leather trimmed jackets, which give more distinction to the standard jacket style; and fringed ones, which give a cowgirl-slash-rocker look. Even blazers made of lambskin or suede are popular. If you are in the market to purchase a leather jacket, be prepared to spend money. A decent leather jacket typically starts at $250.

Leather Motorcycle Jackets

Today, whatever its style, many people continue to wear leather jackets. Because of their durability and the ability to withstand bad weather and falls, they have been the jacket of choice for bikers and military aviators. Although people are making the switch from leather to ballistic nylon and other synthetic materials, many motorcyclists still wear a true leather jacket. Motorcyclist leather jackets offer more protection and are able to withstand more wear than a typical jacket. These thick, heavy jackets offer a layered armor on the shoulders and elbows. Nowadays, there primarily two types of motorcycle jackets. One is tight-fitting, based on the one-piece suit real racers wear. The second is looser, worn by those fond of the motorcycle style, yet looking for a more fashionable coat.

Buying Leather Jackets

Because of their durability, they last forever and they do not require much care. Despite that, however, it is still necessary to take a few protective measures. For instance, wipe off any newfound spills or dirt with a damp cloth, regularly brush the leather if appropriate and store it in a place it can breathe as opposed to wrapping it within plastic. And, when it needs a good cleaning bring it to professional leather cleaner. Though it will cost some money, it will be worthwhile.

Alternatives to Leather

All that said, in this century more awareness being brought to animal cruelty. There is now quite wide selection of fake leather jackets. Although these can look just like the real ones, they are cheaper and offer a more conscious alternative. Along the same line, if you really want a true leather jacket, consider buying a used vintage one instead of generating new demand.
