Lip Gloss
Lipsticks and lip liners are used to shape, color, and draw attention to the lips. Lip gloss can accomplish the same result, yet also be applied by itself or on top of existing color to give lips a fresh, shimmering shine.
Lip Gloss Application
Lip gloss is best applied with a brush in order to get an even spread in applications. Wands can also be dipped in lip gloss and applied, or even fingertips, however fingers provide the least amount of even and accurate coverage. Lip gloss can feature, highlight, or even define lips by using a variety of color and application techniques.
Lip Gloss Application Techniques
To give lips a natural look, line them in a neutral lip pencil, and then fill them in with a light peach or pink lip gloss tone, giving them a nice light shine without distracting from other features. To plump lips, line them and fill them in with a favorite lip color and then apply a dab of clear lip gloss to the center of the lower lip, smacking lips together once to give the top lip a dash of shine too. The center of the lip will catch the light, causing the mouth to look fuller. Powder can also be lightly dusted across lips to reduce a shimmer that may be brighter than the occasion calls for, yet still retain that natural look.
Choosing a Lip Gloss Color
There are makeup terminologies that refer to skin tones as either seasons or temperatures, such as "cool," "warm," "winter," and "summer." While coloring and complexion can influence lip gloss palate choices, they shouldn't restrict individuals to choosing only lip gloss of a certain specific hue.
While golds, reds, and purples may generally look better on those with light eyes and medium to light hair, it doesn't mean that other shades shouldn't be experimented with; even the counterpart colors meant for those with dark eyes and hair like pinks, burgundies and raspberries may end up looking fabulous with the right eye color, setting, or ensemble.
So try and experiment with a variety of tones and colors, including simple clear lip gloss, to achieve a desired look. One final good use for lip gloss is to rejuvenate old or rarely used lipsticks. Perhaps a lipstick tube looked great in the store and then ridiculous at home? Well, blend the lipstick with a lip gloss and create a new color that just may turn out to be perfect!
Purchasing Lip Gloss
Purchasing lip gloss can be as costly or as thrifty as desired. Some cheaper brands may be stickier or tackier (in every sense of the word!) than the more expensive lip glosses, but there are a few out there that may outperform even the brand name favorites. Take a few chances on different brands in order to experiment what works the best, and stop by a local cosmetics counter to pick the associate's brain about the latest techniques and colors.
