Sewing Labels
Sewing labels are small, unobtrusive items capable of helping you sell your product, personalize gifts and crafts, ensure the safe return of lost garments and provide instructions on textile care. These handy little fabric tags are an essential commodity for commercial garment producers and find a multitude of uses among crafters, seamstresses and avid sewers.
Sewing Label Facts
A sewing label placed in a garment represents you! It represents your company, the quality of your brand, the time and care you took in creating the garment, or the love with which you gifted the item. Your choice of a sewing label may from necessity be based on practical concerns such as cost and production turn-around time, but the form and finish of the label should also be given serious consideration. There are dozens of label choices on the market. Most fall into one of two categories: printed or woven.
Printed labels are the most economical type of sewing label. They can be produced quickly in large or small quantities. Popular uses for these labels include nametags for personal clothing items and size, care, origin, or content tags for manufactured items. They are made of cotton and polyester blends, satins or damask fabric, and printed with indelible inks. Inks tend to fade over time, so this type of label may not be your best choice for high-end garments or crafts.
The majority of retail garment producers use woven labels for their products. These sewing labels come in a variety of fabrics. Due to its relatively cheap cost, taffeta has been a traditional favorite. It can, however, be stiff and scratchy. Satin sewing labels are often chosen for their inherent softness, but it is the damask label that gives the best overall finish, versatility and comfort. No matter the choice of fabric, all woven sewing labels are created on a loom. They can be personalized with logos, brand names or other identification.
Both printed and woven labels are available as sew-in or iron-on. A sewn-in label will last much longer than an iron-on label.
